#MandelaDay: South Africa Celebrates Mandela Centenary

It’s Mandela Centenary day!!!

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. The African Hero was born on 18 July 1918 and died on 5 December 2013.

Today, 18 July 2018 makes it 100 years since Mandela was born and it would have been his birthday. Around Africa and the world, he is being celebrated and remembered for his activism, heroism, sacrifice, legacy and being the first black president of the South African people.

A Kaleidoscope on the Mandela Centenary Day celebration

  • Former US President gives a lecture at the 16th Annual Mandela Day celebration leaving everyone especially the audience with much food for thought about how to achieve a better future, and how young people will live out the Mandela Legacy.
  • For the centenary of Nelson Mandela’s birth, the Mandela Foundation commissioned Mandla Langa to reflect on Madiba’s legacy five years after his passing. Langa is a renowned author of both fiction and non-fiction, and in 2017 partnered with the Foundation on the book Dare Not Linger: The Presidential Years, an account of Madiba’s 1994-1999 presidency. The essay by him published here interprets Madiba’s life in relation to local and global contexts.
  • Meghan Markle and Prince Harry on Tuesday unveiled the Nelson Mandela Centenary Exhibition in Southbank, London to celebrate the 100th birthday of the former South African president, Nelson Mandela and The Duke and Duchess of Sussex chatted with Mandela’s granddaughter, Zamaswazi Dlamini-Mandela at the event marking 100 years since the late freedom fighter was born.
