Up there with the most delicious and sumptuous fruits of all times is Mango. A fruit that in Nigeria comes with the rainy season.

I always get excited when the mango season is on. Mangoes are generally sweet, although the taste and texture of the flesh vary across cultivars, some having a soft, pulpy texture, while the flesh of others is firmer, like an avocado.

Mango is the national fruit of India and there were festivals – some till this day – celebrating mangoes only. Apparently, the fruit first made its appearance 30 million years ago in the area now known as Northeast India before moving to the south of the country. It was the visiting Portuguese explorers who named it mango, a corruption of its Malayali name, maanga.
