A first edition copy of Chinua Achebe’s classic novel, “Things Fall Apart” sold for N1 million!
The private sale took place on Twitter after Lola Shoneyin, author of The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives and director of the annual Ake Arts and Book festival tweeted “Hey book collectors! My friend is selling a first print, first edition copy of ‘Things Fall Apart’ for N1m. Reply here and she will contact you.”
After several retweets, an anonymous buyer paid N1 million for the classic novel. Lola Shoneyin closed the sales by announcing that the book has been sold. She tweeted: “The book has been bought by an anonymous buyer.”
Things Fall Apart was published in 1958. It is one of the most important books that documents pre-colonial and early colonial socio-economic changes in the south-eastern part of Nigeria. It is one of the finest novels written by an African in the colonial era.
Things Fall Apart won the Man Booker International Prize in 2007. Chinua Achebe was a Nigerian novelist, poet, professor, and literary critic.
