Turning pain to joy: Watch trailer of “City of Joy”

A Netflix documentary on women who survived rape and torture in DRC

Turning Pain To Joy:

A Netflix documentary set in the City of Joy community in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo; a community which helps women who have experienced rape and torture due to war rehabilitate their lives and become leaders in their community is set to be released on September 7

According to the City of Joy website, it was Dr. Denis Mukwege of Panzi Hospital who invited Eve Ensler  to Eastern DRC in 2007 where she met with the women survivors.

She was mostly interested then in knowing what solutions they felt would work in the face of such horrible violence but the women survivors themselves were the ones who birthed the idea of the City of Joy. They said what they most wanted was a place to live in as a community so that they could heal – in essence, they wanted a place to turn their pain to power, thus the City of Joy was born.
